Welcome to the Kairos Coalition

Kairos (καιρός) is an ancient Greek word meaning “the right or opportune moment”, a moment which occurs when both time and destiny collide to produce a window of opportunity for something truly special to happen....if we choose to seize it rather than letting it pass us by.

The Kairos Coalition strives to bring together stakeholders from the public, private and non-profit sectors in order to advance Humane Education and Humane Advocacy skills-building in developing nations where effective grassroots advocacy has the potential to markedly impact the evolution of consumer choice and public policy in ways that advance the Humane Agenda in rapid and dramatic ways.

Our targeted projects strive to create issue awareness, while at the same time working to recruit, train and mentor youth who have the potential and passion to become future animal rights, environmental and social justice leaders within their own communities. We seek to create a vanguard of grassroots change agents who are willing and able to become powerful forces for compassion and kindness in pursuit of a more humane world.

We aim to help young people develop a heightened respect for the value of all life, both human and non-human; a more profound sense of empathy towards each other; an appreciation for the fragility of our shared environment; a deep and abiding understanding of the power of personal choice to make the world a better place for all; and an ambition to translate these beliefs into decisive action.

The vision for a brighter tomorrow starts with today's youth, but we must seize the moment lest it pass us by...

By intervening now, we seek to offer a better way and to change the very course of history.

If you'd like to learn more, please contact me contact me. This project relies on building the bridges that will allow people like you to mentor young men and women just starting out on their own advocacy journies. What you know about the struggle to make the world a more compassionate and peaceful place...your knowledge, your experience and your wisdom are priceless gems for these young warriors. Please share generously of your time, your expertise, your money and your prayers.

Our Projects

The 1st Vietnam Animal Welfare Conference will be held in at the Hotel Continental (134 Đồng Khởi Street, District 1) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from 13-14 September 2014. This event is intended to provide an opportunity for representatives from animal advocacy organizations from throughout Vietnam, and other interested participants to discuss farm animal, companion animal, and wildlife welfare issues in Vietnam, learn about animal welfare campaign strategies, and to network with other advocates. This event is being funded by Humane Society International thru the Kairos Coalition, but is being organized and hosted by the Yêu Động Vật (YDV) Foundation.
The conference will offer a number of educational and networking opportunities, including presentations by domestic and international speakers, panel discussions, and working groups that will brainstorm future animal welfare campaigns. There will also be a screening of the film “Peaceable Kingdom”, and a complimentary vegan buffet.
The conference committee hopes to welcome representatives from Hanoi Pet Rescue, the Vietnam Animal Welfare Association, Animal Rescue & Care - Vietnam, the Asia Canine Protection Alliance, Humane Society International, Animals Asia Foundation, Environment & Animal Society of Taiwan, Vietnam’s National University of Agriculture, and HCM City Agricultural University, among others. Educational Scholarships

Humane Edutainment

Humane Edutainment employs traditional arts and innovative theatrical techniques to increase awareness and to challenge young people to critically reflect upon their deeply-held values and how those values inform their lives as responsible and compassionate consumers and citizens.

Humane Youth Advocacy Training

Combining experiential training methods with mentorship by instructors with real-world experience from around the world, our Humane Youth Advocacy service learning activities seek to provide opportunities for youth to develop the skills and experience necessary to become effective, visionary leaders able to advance the Humane Agenda within their own communities.  Our ongoing activities in support of homegrown volunteer organizations in Vietnam are intended to help develop the confidence and self-sufficiency in a young generation of Vietnamese seeking to liberate, rehabilitate and re-home abused and neglected animals in their own land. We are convinced that these youth will become Vietnam's inaugural generation of animal rescuers and we are committed to helping empower them!

Restored Hope Foster Home....the tide is turning!

What if you could really make a difference?

Since 2010, the Kairos Coalition has been collaborating with an amazing group of young Vietnamese volunteer animal welfare advocates.  This group, called Yêu Động Vật, literally “Animal Lovers”, has since its founding just a few years ago, rescued and re-homed hundreds of abused and abandoned dogs and cats from the unforgiving streets of Ho Chi Minh City.

More recently, the Kairos Coalition and Yêu Động Vật have collaborated to equip two disabled cats named Moon and Happy with with wheelchairs and to engineer locally-produced, low-cost versions for other disabled dogs and cats in Vietnam.

Happy before and after receiving her new wheels!

You can see her try out her new wheelchair for the first time here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0azDS9b9FY8

We have also worked together to implement the first-ever voucher-based spay-and-neuter program in Ho Chi Minh City.  We have together published a Vietnamese language “Go-Veg” guidebook and conducted an inspiring national Humane World Poster contest.

Our next joint project involves establishing a communal foster home for abandoned companion animals rescued from Vietnam’s streets and from the city’s dog- and cat-meat restaurants.

The Restored Hope Foster Home will provide a safe, secure and hygienic communal home where rescued cats and dogs can receive veterinary care and the abundant loving care and socialization that will be necessary for their eventual re-homing into carefully-selected adoptive families.  Lulu, a dog who tried to escape when her family tried to sell her to a dog meat restaurant after they had grown bored with her is just one of the many dogs rescued and re-homed by Yêu Động Vật.

Lulu on her way to her doom…and after her rescue!

The Restored Hope Foster Home will also provide a final safe haven for those disabled cats and dogs who are still able to live a joy-filled life, but who may still require specialized care and attention and thus may not be as readily adoptable. Every life has meaning and purpose and must be nurtured and safeguarded.

This joint effort builds on previous Yêu Động Vật’s education, rescue and adoption work over the last several years and we believe it is the next inevitable step in their evolution as Vietnam’s first home-grown, domestic animal welfare advocacy organization.

Now is the time to act.  Over the last year we have witnessed a dramatic escalation in conflicts between animal lovers and dog thieves operating to supply Vietnam’s Thịt chó (dog meat) restaurants.  We are truly witnessing the convergence of two trends:  The old way of the dog meat trade, where animals didn’t count for much, is coming up against an emerging new trend of keeping true companion animals that are loved, nurtured and valued for their own sake.

You can read more about these “Dog Wars” here: http://www.thanhniennews.com/2010/pages/20110716165422.aspx and here:

Yêu Động Vật’s intends the Restored Hope Foster Home to be a clear and unequivocal beacon of hope for Vietnam’s emerging animal welfare community and as a symbol of their own commitment to “no more homeless pets”.

Now, the real work begins and they can’t do it alone…they need your help and solidarity.

Real estate in Vietnam, and particularly in Ho Chi Minh City, is particularly expensive especially when you consider that the average annual per capita income is only $1,168.   The lease on the Restored Hope Foster Home is a heavy burden to bear for an organization comprised mostly of young adults and teens who have thus far largely covered the cost of rent, food and veterinary care from their own salaries.

In solidarity with Yêu Động Vật’s vision for a more humane Vietnam, the Kairos Coalition has already provided funds to cover the lease through June; however, our goal is to provide security and stability for the project through December 2012.

Fortunately, a Kairos Coalition supporter has generously agreed to match dollar for dollar every single donation made on behalf of this project.  But we don’t get a dime unless you give first, so I’m asking you today to consider giving generously to this project.

Every single contribution made on behalf of this Chip-In will go directly to support this project.  Every cent will go toward the lease for the home and towards supplies and medical expenses for the rescues.

Will you support them?  The young people of Vietnam are making a stand for kindness and compassion…will you stand with them and with the animals?

March 2011 Activity Update

In Hanoi, the Kairos Coalition has partnered with IOGT-VN, a domestic youth development NGO, to pilot a Humane Edutainment program aimed at fostering the development of a cadre of youth grassroots animal activists. IOGT-VN has ten years of experience in developing the leadership potential of Vietnamese youth, but had never before been involved in animal protection issues; however, they were intrigued by the Humane Edutainment concept and have quickly become its most enthusiastic proponents.…
